Use this checklist to help gather the information that you need to register for the MTEL.

1. Review your registration options.

Registration for computer-based testing is available only on the Internet. See "Internet Registration."

For paper-based testing:

  • Select a registration method—Internet or telephone (for reregistration only).
  • Candidates who registered for the MTEL previously may also register for paper-based tests by telephone during the regular or late registration period. See the telephone reregistration schedule in "Test Dates."

2. Prepare your payment.
  • Payment for computer-based testing must be made by credit, debit, or check card (VISA or MasterCard only).
  • Payment for paper-based testing may be made by credit, debit, or check card (VISA or MasterCard only).

3. Gather the personal information you need to register.
When you create an account or register for the MTEL, you will be asked to provide the following information:
  • Name
  • Address
  • Daytime telephone number (required for Internet registration)
  • Date of birth (required to access your test results online)
  • Social security number or Department-issued identification number*
  • Email address (required for Internet registration)
  • First (native) language
  • Ethnicity (optional)
  • Gender (optional)
  • License category (refer to "Licensure Information")

4. Review the background questions.
If you are registering for the MTEL and your license category is Academic (PreK–12), you will be asked to answer some background questions. Refer to "Educational Background Questions" to prepare answers to the questions you will be asked during registration.
5. Review the Rules of Test Participation.
Before you register, you must read and agree to abide by the policies stated in "Compliance with Testing Rules," including the Rules of Test Participation, and all procedures and policies contained on the current program website.
