TELEPHONE REGISTRATION
During the regular and late registration periods, telephone registration is available only if you have taken
an MTEL test previously. This service is called reregistration. During the emergency registration period,
telephone registration is open to all candidates.
See “Test Dates” for the registration schedule, including the telephone reregistration schedule. Telephone
lines are generally busiest at the beginning and end of the day and at the beginning and end of the registration
period. You may wish to call at times when the registration telephone lines are less busy or register
on the Internet.
Before you register. Before you register, please review the “Registration Checklist” to ensure that you
have all of the information you need to complete the registration process. Because of laws protecting
confidentiality and privacy, only you may register yourself for a test.
You may make a request for alternative testing arrangements when you register for the MTEL during the
regular, late, or emergency registration period. To ensure that there is adequate time to process your
request, you are strongly encouraged to register and submit all required information as early as possible,
preferably by the regular registration deadline. See “Registering for Alternative Testing Arrangements” for
information about how to complete and submit the Alternative Testing Arrangements Request Form.
How to register. To register, call NES at (413) 256-2892 or (866) 565-4894, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. eastern
time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Use your name as it appears on your government-issued
identification.
If you do not have a U.S. social security number, you should request an identification number from the
Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Send your request by e-mail to fshipps@doe.mass.edu. If you are unable to
e-mail, you may call (781) 338-6630. If you are a Canadian resident, you may not use your social insurance
number to register. You must request an identification number from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as
described above.
Because your test results will be sent directly to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education according to your social
security number or Department-issued identification number, failure to record this number correctly may
delay the issuance of your license. Any discrepancies between your name as it appears on your MTEL
registration and on your licensure application may also delay the issuance of your license.
When you call, have a pen or pencil and paper available. You will be given details about your responsibilities
and specific information about the test administration, such as your reporting time and the test site
address. Once you have completed your telephone registration, do not send in a registration form. If you
do send in a registration form after you have registered by telephone, your form will not be processed or
returned to you.
Payment. Payment must be made at the time of registration using a credit card (VISA or MasterCard
only) or a debit or check card that carries the VISA or MasterCard logo and that can be used without the
entry of a personal identification number (PIN). Bank cards without the VISA or MasterCard logo cannot
be accepted. Additional fees apply for late and emergency registration. See “Test Fees and Payment Policies”
for complete information about registration fees and payment policies.
Confirmation. After your registration has been processed, you will receive your admission ticket by U.S.
mail.
