ABOUT THE MTEL
MTEL PASSING REQUIREMENTS

A candidate’s performance on a test is evaluated against an established standard. Each test has its own qualifying score, i.e., passing score, set by the Massachusetts Commissioner of Education. There is no expiration date associated with passing scores for the MTEL.

For more information about score reporting, go to the MTEL web site, www.mtel.nesinc.com, and select “Score Reporting.”

Retaking the MTEL

Candidates who do not achieve the passing score on a test may retake it at any of the subsequent test administrations at which that test is offered. For the Communication and Literacy Skills test or the Vocational Technical Literacy Skills Test, you may take one or both subtests (reading and/or writing) at a given administration. Effective as of the March 7, 2009, administration, for the General Curriculum test, you may take one or both subtests (multi-subject and/or mathematics) at a given administration. Once you meet the passing score on a subtest, you do not have to take that subtest again. Also refer to the section on testing on consecutive test dates in “Test Fees and Payment Policies.”
